About Steps House

Our Mission

Our purpose is to help those transition back into life after incarceration, homelessness, or substance use. Chemical dependency and mental health issues are not a prerequisite for our program. However, most of the men admitted do suffer from these problems. We provide a safe, drug-free, therapeutic environment. We hope to encourage independence and responsibility and prepare them to return to being active members of society. Our concern is not what you have done in the past but what you want to do for your future and how we can help you plan and prepare.

Our History

Steps House is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization founded in 1991 with a single substance use recovery house, and has evolved into an expansive Residential Housing Program that has the capacity to house 70 homeless men. In 1998, Steps House implemented the Steps House Homeless Veterans Program (SHHVP), a Veteran Administration  Grant Per Diem program that started with 11 beds and has expanded to 45 beds. Since its inception, Steps House remains dedicated to serving the Knox area homeless population and assisting people who face many barriers in reaching housing stability.

Our Facilities

Steps House currently owns 10 houses and 3 small apartment buildings to provide housing for the individuals in our programs.
